Narcissism
The ego is not master in its own house.
Narcissism/Narcissistic personality disorder is one of the several types of personality disorders. It is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others. Besides, Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) involves a pattern of self-centered, arrogant thinking and behavior, a lack of empathy and consideration for other people, and an excessive need for admiration.
People with narcissistic personality disorder are extremely resistant to changing their behavior, even when it’s causing them problems. Their tendency is to turn the blame on to others. People with NPD have a very exaggerate sense of their own importance. Here are some symptoms.
Symptoms of NPD:
· Need constant praise and admiration
· Exploit others for personal gain without any guilt or shame
· inability to listen to others
· believing that others are envious of them
· unrealistic goal setting
· obsession with class and status
· Sense of entitlement
· can ‘write off’ friends permanently over small or imagined issues
· envy for those perceived as being of a higher status
Causes of NPD:
There is not a single defined cause of narcissistic personality disorder. But, researchers agree that both genetic and environmental causes are at play. Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder have been found to have less volume of gray matter in the left anterior insula, (the part of the brain related to empathy, emotional regulation, compassion, and cognitive functioning). Examples of types of some negative or destructive interpersonal environments interacting with developmental phases include:
· Suffering from severe childhood abuse
· Being overindulged by parents, peers, or family members
· Inconsistent parental care giving — unreliable or unpredictable care
· Receiving excessive praise from parents or others over your looks or abilities
· Being born with an oversensitive temperament
Treatment of NPD :
Treatment for NPD primarily consists of talk therapy, also known as psychotherapy. If symptoms of NPD occur alongside depression or another mental health condition, then appropriate medications may be used to treat the other disorder. However, there are no medications to treat NPD. Developing positive interactions with other people can greatly improve various areas of your life. Talk therapy has following benefits.
Talk Therapy :
· improves your collaboration with co-workers and peers
· maintains your personal relationships
· recognizes your strengths and potential so you can tolerate criticisms or failures
· understands and manage your feelings
· copes with any self-esteem issues
· sets realistic goals for yourself
